The successful candidate will be expected to hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field and will be enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Bourgogne. The candidate’s work will be carried out in part at I3mainz in Germany and in part at the Le2i in France.

His research will be within I3mainz’s WiDOP project which benefits from a three-year funding support (~ 27 000 EUR per year for this position) granted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany). WiDOP (Wissensbasierte Detektion von Objekten in Punktwolken für Anwendungen im Ingenieurbereich), which stands for “Knowledge-based detection of objects in 3D point clouds for engineering applications”, is an ambitious project aiming to devise and develop efficient intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing of terrestrial laser scanner data.

This project contrasts with existing ones in that it uses prior knowledge as basis for a selective, object-oriented detection, identification and modeling of objects present in the point cloud. This knowledge can be obtained from various sources such as databases, construction plans, as-built plans or Geographic Information Systems. Within WiDOP, the successful candidate will work on knowledge-based numerical processing of 3D point clouds.

The goal is to develop and implement intelligent methods capable of achieving an automated processing, detection, identification and modeling of objects from terrestrial laser scanner data. Germany PhD Position in Solar Cell

Ph.D. position in solar cell, thin film technology
Institute of Physics / Thin film group / Lab. Prof. Adrian, University of Mainz
Mainz, Germany

The Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz is one of Germany’s largest Universities with more than 30000 students. Mainz is located in the Rhein-Main-area close to Frankfurt airport.

The Physics department has branches in nuclear physics, atomic physics, and solid state physics. Close cooperations to Max-Planck Institues on the campus exist and enhance research possibilities

Description:

Solar cells are now a standard high tech product. However, current thin film solar cells use rare and expensive materials like indium. With decreasing manufacturing costs of the modules material prices will become more important. In our project we look for alternative materials for solar cells which will be relevant in future generation solar cells.

Within a joint cooperative project of several Universities and research institutes we will prepare at the University of Mainz new thin film materials and characterize the inner interfaces of solar cell structures by high energy photoemission using our synchrotron measurement facilities. The material we grow will serve as absorber material in p-i-n type solar cells.

The candidate should have a good knowledge on solid state physics and/or thin film technology. Social competence is needed for integration in a research team as well as for a llimited amount of teaching obligations at the University. Fluency in English is a must, knowledge of German will be helpful.

Start of the project will be in October 2009

To apply:

Please send your cv. to jakob@uni-mainz.de
Expires: November 06, 2009

PhD Studentship in Computational Modelling of Polymer Nanocom

PhD Studentship
Computational Modelling of Polymer Nanocomposites
Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications are invited for a PhD position to be held at the Department of
Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering of the University of Limerick
(www.ul.ie). This studentship is for 3 years. The award includes a scholarship
at the rate of EUR 1300/month and payment of University fees.

Background:
Nanoclay particles offer a cost effective reinforcement for
thermoplastic polymers. The main challenge in exploiting these materials is
optimisation of their morphology. This can potentially be achieved in a typical
industrial forming process, through a careful optimisation of process
parameters. Advanced computational modelling of such processes can be a
useful tool in achieving that goal.

Research tasks:
The successful candidate will work on the development of
advanced computational modelling of a highly-complex nonlinear behaviour of
nanoclay-reinforced polymers subjected to mechanical loads at temperatures
around glass transition. The ultimate objective of this research is to optimise
process parameters (strain, strain rate, temperature) to enhance both
mechanical and barrier properties of polymer nanocomposites. The research
will address: (1) implementation of the 3D polymer constitutive model into FE
software ABAQUS, (2) development of computational models reflecting 3D
nanocomposite morphologies, and (3) development and implementation of a
3D multi-scale strategy to predict overall nanocomposite response.
Eligibility criteria and further information: Both EU and non-EU resident
candidates will be considered. Candidates should hold a first or upper second
class degree in engineering (or closely related discipline). They should have a
strong background in solid mechanics and FEM, previous experience in
programming (e.g. Fortran, Python), and interest in polymers.

Applications should include a personal statement (max. 800 words), CV,
student transcript and the names and email addresses of two referees. Please
direct all enquiries and applications to Dr. Lukasz Figiel by email:

Lukasz.Figiel@...

The position is available immediately. Applications will be
considered on a rolling basis until the post is filled.

PhD position at INSA, Lyon, France

In the framework of the iPLAN European project the aim of this thesis is to
enhance the computational efficiency and to adjust the complexity-accuracy
trade-off of the MR-FDPF (Multi-Resolution Frequency Domain Partial Flows)
method for indoor radio coverage prediction. This method, particularly efficient
for indoor propagation, is devoted to be implemented in a radio

network planning tool. This tool needs to propose all kind of modern radio link
conditions: indoor, outdoor, indoor to outdoor, outdoor to indoor, for 3G/4G,
WLAN or WMAN (WiMax), from macrocells to femtocells.

Thus, the study will contain four main parts:

-computational efficiency enhancement of the MR-FDPF method;
-implementation of statistical analysis of radio channel behaviour
rather than only considering mean power level;
-integration of our indoor propagation tool into a wide areas
simulation tool with other propagation methods such as ray-tracing in
collaboration with other partners;
-measurement campaigns and model calibration.

The PhD candidate will work the first year in the CITI Lab of INSA Lyon in order
to propose all possible enhancements on the MR-FDPF method and will be
associated to the SWING INRIA project team (at INSA Lyon, France). Then he will
spend two years seconded in Ranplan Wireless Network Design Ltd, partnet of the
iPLAN project (located in Luton, UK). Ranplan's R&D department is expected to
launch an automatic planning tool, and the results of this work will contribute
to this innovating tool.
