Postdoctoral Positions and Graduate Fellowships Available

Dr. Qihua Xiong won 2nd batch Singapore National Research Foundation Research Fellowship (NRF-RF) and recently joined Nanyang Technological University as a Nanyang Assistant Professor. With a strong support from both NRF and NTU, Dr. Xiong is expecting to establish a vibrant group dedicated into the research in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Dr. Xiong finished his B.Sc. degree in Physics at Wuhan University in 1997. After obtained his M.Sc. degree in physics from Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2000, he went to United States of America to pursue his Ph.D.

research. In 2006, he received his Ph.D. degree in materials science at The Pennsylvania State University under the supervision of Professor Peter Eklund. His Ph.D. research covers from fundamental physical properties especially phonon properties of semiconductor nanowires, to nanomechanical properties and twinning superlattices in nanowires. He joined Professor Charles Lieber laboratory at Harvard as a postdoctoral research fellow in 2006. During his postdoctoral training, he has extended his research to include nanoelectronics and nanoelectronic devices for single molecule biosensing.
Dr. Xiong received several awards and fellowships during his graduate and undergraduate studies, including Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) fellowship (DOE and NSF, 2006), Graduate Award for Academic Excellence (The Pennsylvania State University, 2006), Excellent Graduate Fellowship Award (1998 and 1999, CAS), Hui Kai Fellowship Award (Wuhan University, 1996), Gui Zhiting-Xu Hailan Fellowship Award (Wuhan University, 1995) and Outstanding Student Award (Wuhan University, 1994).
Dr. Xiong's group is seeking strongly motivated postdoctoral research fellows to carry out a multi-million dollar project (funded by Singapore National Research Foundation and Nanyang Technological University), which is on the cutting-edge research in nanomaterials, nanoelectronics, energy and nanoelectronic-bio interface for single molecule biosensing. Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the project, candidates with a Ph.D. degree in experimental condensed matter physics, electronic engineering, chemistry (physical or polymer), biochemistry and biophysics are all encouraged to apply. Annual salary ranges from S$ 36,000-60,000, depending on qualification. Starting date is flexible and multiple positions are available.
We also keep hiring Ph.D. students with full scholarships support, undergraduate students who want to expand their horizon. For perspective Ph.D. students, please be advised that TOEFL and GRE scores are recommended but NOT required. Applicants can take equivalent English test organized by the school. Interested candidates from Physics, Chemistry, Biological, MatSE or EE should contact Dr. Qihua Xiong with their CVs. We are looking for highly passionate young students who are willing to devote themselves in the world-wide ambition and enterprise of nanotechnology. A master's degree or demonstrated research experience in undergraduate is a plus.

GATEWAYS *

Multi-level assessment of ocean-climate dynamics: a gateway to
interdisciplinary training and analysis

GATEWAYS invites applications** for

15 Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) at the PhD student level
The GATEWAYS project conducts interdisciplinary climate change research on the
ocean circulation and its linking with climate processes on regional to global
scales. The project combines modern observations, climate (ocean, atmosphere)

modelling and marine palaeoclimatology. GATEWAYS sets out to test the
sensitivity of the ocean circulation to changing climates of the past. It will
assess the dynamics of the ocean circulation as a function of climate change;
the influence of ocean circulation on continental climate; and the impact of
inter-ocean water transports on the basin- wide overturning circulation.

The project provides training in laboratory-based analytical protocols and
instrumentation, data processing and management, and numerical climate
modelling. Complementary skills training focuses on project management and
communication techniques. Trainees receive an integrated interdisciplinary
grounding in the marine and climate sciences; proficiency in analytical
procedures, climate modelling and statistical data processing; managerial skills
to design and carry out research in an efficient and pragmatic way.

An information package providing project overview and application information is
available at the Institut de CieÌncia i Tecnologia Ambientals of the Universitat
AutoÌnoma de Barcelona at

financial support from our MMD Study Fund. For the 2009 curriculum year, 6
talented non-EER students have been selected that receive full
scholarships covering all study and living costs. These students come from
Turkey, India, Ethiopia, and Zambia.

For the 2010 curriculum year, we will also select 6 non-EER students that will
receive a full scholarship. Candidates for the MMD scholarship however must
apply before 1 December 2009 and thereby can also apply for HFP or NFP
fellowships (deadlines 1 February and 1 March 2010 respectively).

PhDÂ positions in the NCMLS graduate school
Approximately 160 PhD students are part of the Nijmegen Centre for Molecular
Life Sciences graduate school. Each year, more than 40 PhD positions become
available. MSc MMD graduates are prime candidates for these PhD positions, which
have been written by one of the 40 Principal Investigators of the NCMLS.

Personal PhD grants
A successful research career starts when a masters student writes his/her own
research project. The Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre has provided 3
PhDÂ grants for the best projects written by Molecular Mechanisms of Disease
(MMD) or Biomedical Science (BMS) students that started their masters in 2007.
The selected students will start their projects in September of 2009. Likewise,
3 PhD projects have been reserved for MMD and BMS students who have started
their masters in 2008.

For the students starting their MMD or BMS masters in 2009 and thereafter, 6
PhD projects will be available on yearly basis.

Students who want to apply for (almost) full scholarships such as HSP, NFP and
MMD Study Fund should send in their application before 1 December 2009 (to start
in September 2010).

For Dutch students
This master's programme has been accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education.
This means that Dutch students enrolled in this programme may apply for a
government scholarship. For international practical research training, students
can apply for a grant from the 'HSP Talentenprogramma': www.nuffic.nl/hsp
For all international students
Huygens Scholarship Programme (HSP): www.nuffic.nl/hsp(see: international
