Las Vegas Track Club Scholarship Program (2010)

Las Vegas Track Club Scholarship Program (2010)

History: The Las Vegas Track Club (LVTC) Scholarship Program was formally established in 2000 to assist local high school graduates with college expenses. The program is funded by a combination of local merchants, organizations and individuals, and through the fund-raising efforts of the LVTC, which designates one club race per quarter as a scholarship race.

Purpose: The Las Vegas Track Club Scholarship Program is a way of giving back to the community. It shows our commitment to youth running. By supporting young people who have demonstrated academic and athletic excellence, community involvement, and a strong interest in running, we are encouraging healthy, productive, and disciplined lifestyles in these young adults who are the leaders of the future.

Award Amounts: Variable: may be given to a single individual or divided among multiple recipients. Scholarship Award Amounts and how they are disbursed are at the sole discretion of the LVTC Board of Directors. Over the past three years scholarship awards have totaled $31,000, including 2009 when a total of $10,500 was distributed among ten LVTC high school seniors.

Scholarship Committee: The Scholarship Committee is made up of club members selected by the LVTC Board of Directors. The Committee Chairman is appointed by the Board and serves as the liaison between the Board and the Committee as the point of contact for inquiries about the Scholarship Program from members or the general public.

Eligibility: Any southern Nevada scholar athlete who is both a graduating high school senior (Class of 2010) and a member of the LVTC may apply. Applicants must have been members of the LVTC for at least five months prior to the cutoff date for application submission. For 2010 the application cutoff date is April 7, 2010; the applicant must have been a member prior to November 7, 2009.

Selection Criteria: Scholarships are based upon achievements during the student’s high school career in the following areas: (1) academics, as measured by high school grade point averages (GPA), both unweighted and, if applicable, weighted, and SAT/ACT test scores; (2) athletics, with emphasis on cross country, track & field, and participation in club running; (3) extracurricular activities and community involvement, including LVTC events as reflected in Grand Prix points; (4) a personal essay; (5) two letters of recommendation. Weighting between these areas will be determined by the sole discretionary judgment of the ScholarshipCommittee and the Board of Directors.

The award is intended for the use of the recipient in the pursuit of post-secondary education. Money will be awarded to the winner or winners in the form of a one-time, single cash grant presented at the LVTC Annual Awards Banquet held each year, usually in June.

Applications must be submitted to the Committee (see address below) and received no later than Wednesday, April 7, 2010. Applications are available on-line at www.LVTC.org (the LVTC web site), or through the mail by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope with an application request to:
