(Bio)geochemistry (post1) : You should be an organic, inorganic or isotopic geochemist. You may have interests in past or present environmental change, and modern or ancient microbial biogeochemistry. An appreciation of biological and mineralogical dimensions in geochemical processes would be a distinct advantage.

Geoenergy (post 2): You will develop research into the production of cleaner geoenergy, including conventional and unconventional petroleum, coal and CCS. You may have interests in fluid geochemistry, subsurface microbial processes, chemical sensors or fluid flow, and you will have the opportunity to build a collaborative research programme with geoscientists, chemists, biologists and engineers.

You will also contribute to our highly regarded M.Sc. courses in Petroleum Geochemistry and Environmental Biogeochemistry and have opportunities to develop new themes at Masters and PhD level. PhD researcher on flexible devices at M2i

PhD researcher on flexible devices at M2i
The concerted research between M2i, TNO and the Holst Centre aims at developing the technology for modular ultra light and ultra thin, flexible, easy-to-wear electronic products such as lighting and signage devices, reusable and disposable sensor devices, deformable solar panels and displays. An important aspect of this program is to gain knowledge about the mechanical behavior, reliability and durability of these flexible devices during production and during actual usage.
The scientific aim of the project is to develop tools that enable to understand and predict the life-time of multilayer laminates taking into account the effect of visco-elastic and/or plastic material behavior during cyclic loading and the environment, in particular relative humidity, on the development of the mechanical damage. The tools to be developed comprise suitable experimental methods to impose a known stress/strain state on a chosen multilayer material and to understand the underlying physical mechanisms. The location is TU Eindhoven.

Requirements

Candidates for the PhD positions should have a solid background in materials science with substantial interest in experimental work. The candidates should have a Masters degree in materials science, chemical engineering or a related field. Interest in failure analysis and/or microstructural characterization is required and experience is further an advantage.

Candidates are therefore strongly advised to contact directly Belgian universities for specific requirements of the different courses concerning language certificates and score.
Applicants are not obliged to have a letter of admission from a Belgian university for the academic year of 2010-2011 before submission of application and/or interviews. However, holding such a letter of admission will be an advantage.
GRE/GMAT is required by some universities for courses in Economics, Finance or Natural Sciences. Please check this requirement directly with the university you want to apply for before submitting an application to the Embassy.

What kind of courses can be studied under a Belgian Bilateral Scholarship (BBS)?
Scholarships are awarded for Master and Mixed PhD studies which could be followed either in French or in English at a Belgian university.

Master studies in Belgium normally take 1 or 2 years, depending on the selected course and/or university. It is up to applicants to check on the website of the universities and to make their choice among the available Master courses. Applicants can apply for only one course at one university.

Mixed PhD studies normally last for 48 months of which 16 months will be spent in Belgium and the rest of the time in Vietnam. Applicants must choose the research subject and reach an agreement on the work plan with the promoters (Belgian and Vietnamese) before the submission of their application.

Within the framework of the Belgian Bilateral Scholarship Programme, the fields of study are not restricted. However, priority will be given to the areas of intervention of the Belgian development cooperation in Vietnam, notably: environment, water and sanitation, waste management, education, health, agriculture and rural development, engineering and governance.

For which Belgian universities can BBS candidates apply?
There is no restriction concerning the Belgian universities for which a candidate can apply. However, courses in international colleges located in Belgium are not eligible for Belgian Bilateral Scholarships.

Candidates are strongly advised to contact the selected university for confirmation on the availability of the course in the 2010-2011 academic year and the language of instruction before the submission of their application.

The following websites will enable the candidates to find more detailed information on the Belgian universities: www.studyinflanders.be and www.studyinbelgium.be
